Development of Phased Array Weather Radar enabling observation of sudden changes in weather and short-range weather forecasts

Aug 31, 2012

National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Osaka University, and Toshiba Corporation have succeeded in developing Phased Array Weather Radar capable of observing the sudden development of torrential rain systems and twisters. The system has begun trial observations on the Suita campus of Osaka University. This radar is able to observe the 3-dimentional structure of heavy rainfalls every 10 seconds with a resolution of 100m. It will be helpful in observing sudden changes in weather and short-range weather forecasts.
Part of these research achievements has been obtained from the research project commissioned to NICT, R&D of the Next-generation Doppler Radar.
